It has been some time since I was here last! I saw my P.C.P. today, she has taken over my pain management from my other dr., he has moved up in the V. A. hierarchy.
She pulled up the x-rays she had me take, on my neck surgeries. Well, it all looks good, if you like a complete metal neck?! The first two fusion surgeries were with a cadaver chip, and the metal plate. The last one, since the second one failed to take, they had to go in from the rear and put rods in to hold my neck up off the herniated discs?! Well, it has relieved some pain, but it will never reduce my pain levels below the 7 it usually stays at?
I get to go see the surgeon on the 24th., and see what he thinks about it all? I don't believe there is anything else he could possibly do??? Wow, you can really feel the metal, it feels like your head is sitting on metal, and not the soft discs!!! You get used to it, eventually!!!
Well, that is my big update, should anyone care? LOL!!! Yepper, once a chronic pain sufferer, always a chronic pain sufferer!!!
If you fear the use of narcotics, why take the dilaudid? You don't need to fear these types of painkillers! If one or two of them work well to fight off your pain, wouldn't you use them? I take 400mg.s of morphine 100mg four times a day. And oxycodone 5mg.s five times a day for breakthrough pain. No, it really doesn't do a whole lot for me, but it dampens the pain a bit so I can at least function a little?!
I have just finished what I hope is my last fusion surgery on my neck? It hurts a little less now, but still too much to not take these pills! I started with methadone, and worked my way up to 1100 mg.s daily, and the same oxy's as now. After that no longer had an effect on me, my pain specialist switched me to the morphine. Once I hit 700 mg.s a day, he no longer wanted to give me any more than that, as he thought this was a maximum dose? So, I figured if I am not going to get any more relief than this, I asked to be taken down to four hundred a day? My pain doc. thought that was awesome? Once I explained my rationale, he still thought it awesome, as he could now claim that as a success? Right, I still have awful pain, but if they don't know how to help me, then I might as well suffer with the least dosage possible? Oh, he took me up to 450 mg.s a day of lyrica, and said that was as high as he could go? Well, this has been about three years of awful pain because the V.A. in its infinite wisdom, now want everyone off of narcotic drugs! Even lyrica, I hear? Oh, and this is a directive from a politician placed in charge of our (veterans) health care. Really? This guy has zero knowledge of anything medical, but since he is in charge, and there have been some suicides, he thinks everyone can live without pain relief?! How does a two bit politician get to be in charge of an entire health care system, and make stupid rules for us to live by? And what does this two bit politician know about pain, other than the pain in the rear he is to us? NOTHING, he knows NOTHING, and yet we have to be weaned off of anything that helps us live at least a little?
Sorry, got off on a tangent rant there!
I was offered a pain pump, have you or your doctor talked about this? It is supposed to be very effective on blocking pain signals to the brain? I don't think it works well for those of us who have nerve damage? At least I can't find anyone who has the pump, that also has severe nerve damage? So, that is the extent of knowledge to which I have on pain management? Sorry, I can't help more?!
Hi, I may not be the person you wanted to talk to, but I have been living with chronic pain for many many years. At first, I was on methadone slow release, and oxycodone for breakthrough pain. After several years of this, I was at the top of the methadone allowed, 1100 mg., so I was switched over to morphine 100mg. slow release tabs. I was started at 400 mg.s a day, but that dose had little to no effect? I was then upped each month 100 mg.s a day, so it went up to the 700. After a couple of years on this, I asked my pain doc. for something stronger, he said I was at the maximum dosage for morphine. He then offered me a pain pump. I don't know if I will need that now, after the last fusion surgery seems to have eased up some of the pain, and even the burning? So, if I can be kept at this dose, doubtful now that the government has stepped in, I can live with what pain I do still have? I may still be in excruciating pain, but now I can at least do somethings I couldn't before?! I can live with the pain I do have, if the government keeps their nose out of our healthcare? Unfortunately, the government has already stepped in?!
Soon, no one will be on these meds, unless they have to have it to maintain their life? Soooo, some of us, me included, will have to be weaned off of narcotic meds. There will be none, if they keep on?
We need to get the government back out of our healthcare systems! Why, the one in charge so far as I can tell, is no doctor at all? We are doomed! Big G has got us by the short hairs!!!
I have read a transcript of the governments step in on controlled substances. They are so concerned with all of the Vets suicides, that they feel narcotic meds are to blame, and so they are trying to regulate everything or everyone who needs this kind of drug just to feel halfway normal!
In the V.A., they are making the pain doc's slowly ease their patients off of any type of narcotic, or any controlled substance. No one is exempt! The "Government" feels like they should know what is best for "EVERYONE"!!! Why, they even put a non doctor in charge of the V.A.? Really? How the hell should he know what is right or wrong for anyone but his million dollar handlers? He doesn't even know what a Vet is, let alone helping one?!
Wow, another thing our government is sticking their nose into, and making it worse for EVERYONE!!!! It is coming, one day no one will have, or even be able to get these drugs, unless you are dying of cancer, or something like it? And we can all thank our congressmen and women, our senators, our governors, and every rotten politician there is for this!!! When you call them, give them a real fine howdy do, then commence to yelling at them, make sure they know how you feel about their interference into your medical needs!!!
Hi, this is such an old post, perhaps it would be best if you started a new one? Up on top of this answer section is a button to start a new conversation. Hover over post now, and select comment.
And when you start the comment, put Annette's name in the header, and she will see it faster that way. Try something like "I am a 73 year old hoping Annette can help me"? Then in the text field, ask your questions or even concerns.
May I ask a question, missyann70? I hope so cause I would like to know this myself?
Can you, or have you tried orajel or any other numbing products? If so, what were the results?
Otherwise, all I can say is try the Gabapentin/Lyrica? I have severe nerve pain in my right arm, side, and down the leg from a herniated disc I neglected to take care of. Now, I have just recently had my third fusion surgery (Dec.31, Happy New Years to me?) on c-5-6-7, from the back of my neck. The first one from the front, worked, the second one, from this same surgeon who did my last one from behind the neck, but the second one failed to fuse, so he had to go in from behind and install some rods to hold my head up off my vertabrates, the grinding and smashing of nerves had me desperate for relief!
Now, with the aid of just a few morphine tablets the slow release kind, and oxycodones for breakthrough pain, I am getting along much better than before! At one time, I was up to 700 mg's a day of morphine tabs, and five oxy's a day just to feel a little normal? I asked my Pain Doc. if I could go down on the morphine a little? Of course he said yes, so we did slowly, one tablet a month, and now I only take four 100mg. tabs a day, plus the oxys, of course.
The intense burning pain is now somewhat tolerable? The best part, of course, is the not grinding my neck bones together! What a relief that is!!!
I still take four Lyrica 150mg. a day, if not, the burning pain would drive me insane!!! I just hope your dr., or pain doc. can help you out with some lyrica? It really does help!
I'm no medical Dr., but this is good question! I've never had that particular problem, anyway? I have seen guys fall on the ground clutching at their solar plexus while playing sports and vomiting? I never could get close enough to ask them how they were feeling?
Hmmm, I can't wait to see the experts answer on this, should prove interesting? Thanks for the post!
