I took Soma once years before I was on opiates, I couldn't move at all, I went back to sleep, and was okay when I woke up. I opted not to take anymore, and tossed the rest of the RX. I haven't taken it since.
My husband also had a bad reaction to Soma when he took it when he was in Vietnam.
My doctor recently retired and I had no trouble finding a pain management doctor and an Internist to replace her with. The pain management doc had no trouble prescribing my meds. I am on old fashioned Medicare, with NO supplementary insurance.
My son also served in Afganistan, during the initial invasion and then multiple times in Iraq. I am so sorry about your son-in-laws OD, and your daughters problems. I don't think the VA pays close enough attention to the families of veterans, but then again they probably have enough on their plates.
Baclofen was too sedating for me, so I quit taking it, I was using it for headaches. I saw a doctor years ago, that told me that most muscle relaxants were just "feel good pills". Most of what he told me was right on.
