Laura - I'm an early childhood special ed teacher and I've done ABA therapy for years...have you discussed the self-injurious behavior with your OT? He/she may have a sensory therapy that might help stave off some of these episodes. This may at least be a temporary solution until you get in to see the behaviorist.
I've seen kids do this kind of thing and even when they are not my own I found it very upsetting. {{HUGS}}.

I went to public school and got a great education. That being said, my DD has a severe food allergy and some pretty steep social anxiety issues, so I am keeping an open mind about homeschooling. She starts K in the fall and I intend to send her and see how it goes. But I'm a certified teacher, so the homeschooling does not concern me as far as whether or not I can do it. I think it might be a lot of fun.View Thread

With my DD, we had an easy time with peeing because we just followed her lead. We were in no hurry and I think the lack of pressure actually made it a smooth transition for her. She continued to insist on pooping in a diaper well into her 3s, though, and we realized it was a control thing for her. So we let it go for awhile and then, when we figured she was beyond ready, we took out a calendar and let her pick a day to be all done with diapers. She picked the farthest date she could find of course but then at the end of every day we would cross off the day on the calendar and count how many were left before diapers were done. When that day finally came, she sat on the pot and never looked back. We never use rewards in our home so our attitude was more like, "yup, of course you use the potty" and that was the end of it (finally!)
Of course, my DS was born four months later so we had only a little break - but it was nice while it lasted!View Thread

I think it is also a good idea to talk about emotions whenever you can, your own and others'. Like, in a book or TV show when a character has a tantrum, talk about whether that is a good choice and how the character could have handled it better. THis teaches them strategies to handle ager when they are not angry and can listen effectively. And point out how the child is feeling, happy, sad, mad, whatever, to get them comfortable identifying and discussing how they feel. It's an easy thing to model yourself as well.View Thread

My DS is 15 months and has an expressive speech delay. We can talk until we are blue in the face (and we do!) and he will not make any speech sounds yet. So we are teaching him sign -he has about 5 right now that he uses regularly - and it has done us all a world of good. My speech therapist comes to my house and teaches me signs at this point, and I teach him. So yes, your mom is wrong. A child can speak 5 words or have 5 signs, at this age they all qualify as "speech" and show progress and possibility.View Thread

I don't know if we can offer a lot of insight with the feeding issues but many of us are living with children with milk allergies and asthma. Please come join us! (For the record, we have all noticed that our children refused their allergic foods long before the allergy was diagnosed - as if they somehow knew they should not be eating it...I think that's really interesting and perhaps relevant to this thread)
