Every now and then I think to look for others like myself, I guess to find a community of sorts.
As of this writing, I'm 32/F. I was 3 months premature, weighed 2.5 lbs at birth, and was apparently at in an incubator for the first 3 or 4 months of my life.
Apparently from what I've read, I got off really lucky.
Healthwise, I'm the only person in my family (well, out of my siblings) that has had to wear glasses. Likely due to the oxygen in the incubator.
I'm not sure what to say as far as intelligence. lately I'm feeling very frustrated.. I am feeling quite dumb, but I'm not sure that's more of a social issue than a intelligence issue. I am fairly well bilingual, so I never had any problems with language. In fact I'd like to certify for technical writing. I know language "naturally" though rules are a bore. I can vouch for the crappy memory.
Health wise, I seem to be doing great. The only issue is that I am way overweight, and I'm not sure if that's more due to past emotional issues, or as I just read tied into discipline issues. That there is a serious challenge. I have nearly zero discipline. Those of you with young children, learn/plan NOW how you are going to teach your child to self discipline, set goals, watch milestones, and achieve them..
I SUCK at math. Though kids in the school system now will likely really benefit from kahnacademy.com. If you don't know it, go check it out ASAP.
The bits you hear about being sensitive to certain materials.. SO TRUE!!! Do your preemies a favour.. for the younguns, take note of what their fav blankies/animals/whatever are, and note the materials. Try to clothe them in only those (or natural) materials, and make them available. They like silk noil? RUN to a fabric store and buy a nice 4 meters of it for them to wrap them selves in. A nicely textures blanket/sweater/ect... best gift ever! Possibly buy small samples of a few different materials, take them home, and see which one they seem to prefer. If a young child seems to always cry at certain sweaters/ect, check the material, it might be driving them nuts!
For the love of god, no corduroy or fully synthetic materials, unless they seem to really like them. My fav's have been hospital-soft-cotton sheets, the kind that are mainly white with a colored strip at the top, soft flannel sheets, and bushy water absorbent terry cloth. Oh yea.. there's a dividing factor.. if it's not water absorbent.. I don't want to touch it. They make a lot of towels and bathrobes out of materials now that, although the seem absorbent, they really arent. Certainly not quick absorbent.

My son was born 11 weeks early (weighed in 1lb 15 oz at birth). He left the hospital 9 weeks later weighing 5lb, 5oz. The nurses at the NICU gave us instructions to continue on Similac Neosure with a recipe to make 24 calories formula. If you can't get the recipe, the 22 calorie formula by itself will help the baby gain weight. If you are breastfeeding, mix some forumla in with the breast milk. He would also eat every 3 1/2 to 4 hours (including nights) when we first brought him home.
He will be 7 months this week and weighs 13lbs which for his gast age (4 months 3 weeks) he is right on track. His NICU doctors that still follow up with him along with his pedicatrician actually say he's above average for his weight.
We have already started him on solids and he is loving it.
Hope this helps for you parents out there.View Thread
Effects of me being born early:
-Autism
-wear glasses since age 6 months due to being partially blind
-behavioral issues
-seizures
-Crohn's disease even though this doesnt just effect preemies
-hearing loss can only hear 50% so I wear a hearing aid
When I was born I needed surgery cuz my stomach was not attached to my esophagus. I was also born with a heart defect and had a heart transplant after going into cardiac arrest. They found out my heart was damaged and underdeveloped due to being born so early. Also I kept getting lung infections for a month I was in NICU developed pneumonia and had to be incubated after birth. They I needed a double lung transplant cuz my lungs collapsed.
Fast forward until I was about 5 and started Kindergarten. Teachers noted I was unusually shy and isolated around other children. When trying to engage with others I would refuse to look at them and steal their toys hit, bite, scratch, kick, etc them I was taking to a psychologist who tested me for autism. It was found I have Rett syndrome, a type of autism. I didn't have symptoms until I started Kindergarten. They immediately put me in special ed class throughout elementary and middle school and high school. Mentally I function at the level of a 6 of 7 year old. But, I am actually really intelligent. I don't understand basic social cues. I don't understand jokes and sarcasm. I have uncontrollable muscle movements. I put my hands to my chin and flap them like a chicken. It helps calm me down. I also constantly move my neck like a turtle. I wish I could stop them. It's like I have Tourettes. I have stopped speaking. I only commuicate by texting and writing on the computer. I have one of those touch screen things that has words that speak on it, It's helped me a ton in school.
I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when I was 15 had symptoms my whole life but always just thought I had a sensitive stomach. I have had 15 surgeries for it. I am currently in remission been in it for 3 years almost.
So that's my story. Please comment.View Thread

I really don't know what to talk about, but I will talk about the struggles that I still have and the complications that I went through. Pretty much my life.
I was born 3 months early and weighing only 1lb and 12 ozs. I had to undergo 2 heart surgeries for the patent ductus arteriosus because the first one failed. From those surgeries I have a almost a foot long scar on my back to my left side of my ribs. One of my ribs was moved and it seems like it got pushed outwards and my left shoulder blade protrudes a lot. I was told by my parents I stayed in the hospital for more than 4 months before I was released.
I know that I learned how to walk very late and speaking even later. I was taught Chinese first and English second and that caused me to do even poorly in school. I know for sure that I have a learning disability and a speech problem. Throughout Elementary school I was put in many various programs to help me become a "normal" student. I was taken away from all my fellow classmates and put in a room with a specialist. I was in ELA,speech cass, and another class that I don't remember throughout Elementary school. I did very poorly in school and my level performance was considered a second grade level when I was in fifth grade.
In middle school all the support that I had in elementary school was gone. I was considered a "normal" student and nobody knew about the learning/speech disabilites that I have. I struggled through middle school, but I was proud with my 3.0 gpa. Socially, I made friends, but it was difficult because with my poor speech in enouceating and I sometimes stutter/mumble and overall just nervous and shy.
High school, the most difficult subjects were math and chemistry. Overall in high school my gpa was a 2.9 unweighted and weighted was 3.4 and a ACT score of 23 scoring 24 in math and 28 in reading.
College, this will be my second year this coming fall at uc denver struggle very challenging on myself. I can't pass basic math classes after numerous tries and it is very discouraging no matter how hard I try, I can't comprehend it.
Problems that I have due to being born 3 months prematurely:
-learning disabilities especially in math/science
-speech disabilities - stutter,mumbling, enounciating
-socially/school - I am very quiet, I don't participate in groups/class,fear in public speaking, anxiety, I consider myself beingaHSP (highly sensitive person) which is a big part of why I have a kind of social phobia.
-Allergic to many perscription drugs that treats pnumonia/pain killers
-I may have glaucoma
Lastly, I am not a parent and hoping that someday I will be and wont be in the 75% who can't have a child due to being extremely premature born.
For the parents, I would like to say, love and protect your child like it was the first time holding your child after birth.
Also, to my parents whom cared for me since birth till now and eventhrough thesuffering that they had to see and to endure. I truly appreciate and love my parents for the support that they have given me.
To those who took your time to read this, and I know there are many grammer/sentence mistakes.

How do I monitor the boys' contact with her? Jason(my baby-daddy) doesn't think it's a big deal. But last week His oldest, who goes to preschool AND daycare, was over all week. And he was all sorts of coughing and runny nosed. And last night I had to take Emma to the ER b/c she couldn't breath, due to all the mucus and phlem. Just wondering how other parents deal with thier other children and thier preemie. Because, as much as we love the boys, we can't chance Emma's health. Hope to get some good advice, Thanks!View Thread
