Thanks so much for your concern and informative reply. I will try to answer most of the questions you asked but I did post a few things that you might overlooked. Boo is a male, 5 years old, all black cat. The first time the vet saw him, he did blood work and the resuklts were all normal. He did a urinalysis and he said he had a slight uterine infection which he gave him a antibiotic shot for shot. The bladder was epty and no stones were found. I kept a close on him in the next few days and saw they he was not using the litter box. I called the vet and he said that Boo has to be urinating somewhere else. I asked, where did he go besides the box. I have beige carpet in both rooms and I would see a wet spot or stain.
Boo went back to the vet and this time they did x-rays and he gave a enema for Boos constipation. The x-rays didnt show anything but the UTI. He ordered Amitriptyline for it and I told him I was buying Laxatone for him to be able to defecate. As far as food, I have to say that Boo is a dry food cat, I put a can of food everyday, half in two bowls for the both of the cats, Boo will be take a couple of bites of the canned food and goes to the other food. I do have a water fountain that is rather new, to this day, I have not seen them go to the fountain. Is the second fountain I bought. In the summer its rather stifling here even when the AC.
I have a plastic basin that people use for various reasons. Its rectangular and I put cold water from the tap and they love that water because I do have good water. I rinse it everyday and put cold water in it. They have been fine drinking from it and they do drink alot of water. The Amitriptyline pills which were cut in half is a real challenge to put it in Boos mouth, thats the only bad thing and reading some articles of Amitriptyline, one of the side effects is constipation. I put the Laxatone on my finger and try to slide it in on the side of his mouth.
Why would the vet order that knowing that Boo has constipation already. Also, that pill is making sleeping alot, more than usual, he moves very slow when he walks. Last night after a few days, I saw that he did #2 in the box which a relief. When I am sleeping I cant know what cat is using the litter box. I put a second box in the other room but to this day they are using it, maybe they have to get used to it. I am wondering if I should call the vet and ask if I should continue with Amitriptyline being that one of side effects is constipation.
I think I posted about the ordeal I went through with one of my cats (Boo) who was sick with lower uterine infection and constipation. The first visit to the vet he gave him a antibiotic shot for the UTI but the blood work was all normal. A few days days later, Boo was still not going to the litter box. Boo went back to the vets and they did x--rays, the bladder was not full, but he had some constipation. He ordered a medication Amitriptyline for the urinary tract infection. Is a pill not liquid and I bought Laxatone for his constipation.
Every day I am giving both the medications, the pill for the UTI and he fights me every time when I give the pill oral. I am glad the pharmacist cut the pills in half, but its a struggle to give Boo the pill. I viewed some videos on how to give a cat pill. I swear the cats in the videos were so serene and looked sedated. It was not way when I try to Boo the pill. I tried to hide it in the food but discovered that he was clever and didn't eat that portion of food. Well, between the two medications, he is still not himself and moves slowly about. Since I have two cats, I have no idea if Boo is going overnight when I am sleeping. I put a second litter box in another room recently but they are not using it, maybe they have to get used to it.
I read all about the medications I am giving him and one of the side effects for Amitriptyline for the UTI listed constipation as one of side effects. Oh great, when the vet knows that he had constipation, why would he order the Amitriptyline. I am so discouraged about this and tapped out my resources for the other visits to the vet I am lost about what to do next.
I wish it was that easy but alot transpired since then. I do give them catnip alot of times and they like it. Since Boo came home and the incidence between Tiger hissing and growling that night I was waiting for Boo to do something in the litter box. I put a separate box in the other room so he can use it. I was in the other room with Tiger last night and hear a cry from other room. I went there and Boo was in the litter box and nothing came out. I thought now what, the Vet said he gave a antibiotic shot for the infection. I called the Vet today and told about Boo not doing anything and cried a bit when he was in the box. He drank enough water to urinate. The vet said he can swing over and look at him again.
He came with his assistant and he palpated all over Boo to see anything was wrong. He said he felt fine but he said cats have a lower uterine tract and it could cause pain when try to void. He gave him a steroid shot in case the pain made him not urinate.
The tables turned last night when Boo started to hiss and growling at Tiger. Boo hid under the bed all last night and today and whenever Tiger peeked his head under, Boo would hiss and growl at him. I cant get him without him growing at me and getting away. I have so many scratches on me try to pry out of the under bed. I thought if i cuddled him and get him to nice to Tiger, but he is very ornery and growls now.
One of my cats (Boo) lately I noticed that he was not drinking water nor going to the litter box. The poor thing would sit outside of litter box and look into in and not going in. I read all about if the bladder is full and no urine is emptied, its a serious condition. So I was able to find a great clinic that was so helpful. I did have not any transportation to go there and I was desperate thinking if my cat develops cystitis or anything I would mortified. So the clinic had one of their staff to pick up my cat. I had the other cat with me and he was looking all over the house for his brother.
The poor thing didnt know what was happening. I talked to him gently and assure that Boo will be come back. The vet called me and what the plan was. He did have a urine infection, they gave a antibiotic shot that lasts 2 weeks. They also run blood tests on him.
The girl brought him back to me. Tiger was so happy to see Boo home, he went to up and nuzzled to him. A few hours later, I hear this low growl from one. My god, my Tiger who's is so gentle and mild all the time, was growling at Boo, then hissing. I could not believe it. He never never did that before. That continued through the night whenever Boo was in sight. Still today, the same thing, no change. I don't know what to do with this onset of Tiger being so ornery at Boo for what reason. Usually they running and playful and grooming each other and now then. Any suggestion would be helpful.
It's probably nothing, but it could be a problem. I give my 2 cats Friskies canned food, different flavors in the pate, chunks or shreds. The other night i saw some red stuff in the bowls. Since both cats feed from the bowls, one in particular like his canned food. I gave them shreds that time. I saw red stuff within the food. Usually at morning if they didnt eat the food I dumped it out and give fresh. Today i gave them a different flavor. What is with the red color in the meat, could it be the canned. Hoping that is nothing wrong with cats. If they were sick, would they still eat, drink water, play and run with the other cat if he was sick..?? I really want to get better food for them but at my budget the higher priced food i couldnt buy. Any theories about the red in the bowl would be appreciated.
I have two male cats, one is orange tabby (Tiger) and a black cat (Boo) that I got when they were about 4 months. They're about 31/2 yrs now. tiger is smaller than Boo. I give them canned and dry food (indoor) because they're indoor cats. I give them one fourth of the can in the morning and if they don'' eat the rest, I don't give them anymore for the day. Boo likes the dry, he don't care for canned ..go figure. Tiger likes his canned foot and hes smaller than Boo. One thing I started in the evening is giving Temptation treats and now I don't how to wean them. At least I make them fetch them when I throw to each cat.
Boo luckily is content and he does'n't care to fetch. If he happens to get the treats, which is not much its ok. Tiger on the other hand, leaps and runs like a road runner to get them. After throwing one handful of treats, he will coming back to get more and I will tell him "no, no more" and he leave and then 30 mins later hes back. He whines and whines to get more. I hate any kind of crying or whining I feel bad and I feel so weak that I give in. What can I do to wean him. They have a box of toys and I try to distract his distraction with no avail. I live alone, no kids, well my son is an adult and whenever he came over, the cats run like rabbits. They are not sociable at all. This has been since I got them. How can 4 month cats develop anti-social tendencies toward other people. Also does the fact that they don't care for their toys is because they're anti-social..??. Any kind of advice would be greatly appreciated.
It will be that time again soon where I take my annual a trip up to see the family for Christmas. My mom and sister will be coming up from Florida. My other sister lives in California and she can not get away at that time so she visits other times to see her grandson. I got a call from her the other day and she is visiting her son and see grandson and will stay at his house and she wants to see me since it's over a year since we saw each other. It just means another train trip to where she is staying. She will pick me up from the train which ten minutes from his son's house.
I of course will have to ask my son if he can stop at my house every day to feed the cats, change the litter. I dont why I feel so guilty about asking him to pop over. Understand he only lives 5 miles away so he should not be feel bothered. I think my real problem is; I have guilty feeling leaving the cats which I have not taken a trip since last year when I went to Florida at Christmas. I spoil them that's a fact, I am too soft at night when they expect their treats and religiously I give them, probably too many treats...it's my fault. One of the cats will come to me and meow and meow till I gave him the treats. I want to ween him off those treats every night. I am quite sure my son won't give them the treats like me. Hopefully he will give cats at least some treats. I have been panicky at night just thinkin taking trip because the catsy start in the morning meowing before 6 am for me to wake up.. They have their bowls full with food and their water but they still want me to get up.
I get SSDI every month because I have speech aphasia. I don't really have contacts nor friends to talk to. I feel I am being a hermit and self conscious becauses about my speech. My daughter in law never, never calls me or takes me anywhere since I came here 4 years ago. I have to wait for my son to take me shopping every two weeks. Whenever I go to their house, she is working (shes a hair sylist) and I never see her. Well, sorry for the ventingf but I wish I can get peace of mind about taking a trip and leaving the cats.
I have limited income so I have to rely on store brand cat food. I usually get the Friskies cans, different varieties for my two cats. They like the canned pate flavors, but after a while they will turn their noses up. I do also get other cans like the chunks, shreds, or grilled. I have to buy variety of Friskies canned because I cant buy a case of one kind. I also buy the friskies dry food, 7 lbs when I shop every other week. I usually get the seafood variety cause they seem to like it. Is there better canned food that I dont know of, with my limited income??. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I bought a water fountain for the cats about year ago and I keep it refreshed with cold water and change filter often. They drank of out of it many times and for the last few months they wont drink from it. I was worried that they wouldnt get enough water so, I have a white plastic basin (the kind you put in a sink) and I never used it. I live on a 2nd floor loft apartments and gets very warm in summer. My poor black cat lies around when weather is sticky. I put cold water in the basin for cats and set it on a towel in the front room. They do love drinking out of it and I clean it every day and then put cold water in it. I never wanted to start that habit, how can I get them to drink again from their water fountain again...?
My cats dont have to go the kennel, because my son will come once a day to feed them and change the litter. That takes a huge load of my mind, I was sick about them going to the kennel. Its funny when people dont communicate, I thought that they wanted me to put the cats in a kennel (he and his wife), but he didnt want me to spend money on a kennel and he said that cats would be in their own environment and not confined, thats 100% better. I asked him if he can stay awhile when he comes over with my granddaughter whos 4. I dont know, the cats go and hide whenever they come visit so, its mute unles he wants to coax them under the bed. They are not the most "sociable" cats. But when I am alone, boy oh boy, they want my attention all the time and especiially in the morning before 6 am one of them will start the yowling until I get up. They have their food bowls full but they want me to get up.
They will miss me terribly I fear and cry looking for me. I know this because when I took a trip before, the lady downstairs reported to me that the cats cried every night, and she heard them. I couldnt help that. That was another place. But I have the solace that my son will come by once a day to feed and change the litter. Thats all I could ask and I have the biggest load off my shoulders that I dont have to bring them to kennel...thankfully.
