I work part time as a dog walker and one of my dogs was away for 2 weeks at a 'kennel" where he was learning to hunt and other things and came home sick....he has a runny nose with lots of mucas, is very tired and is coughing a little bit...
I am positive he has his "Bordatella" (sorry about the spelling) vaccine but I was wondering if he could still have gotten just a milder case of kennel cough even though he was vaccinated...I used to work at an shelter several years ago and I thought I remembered that dogs even though vaccinated could still get kennel cough...
The other thing I am thinking about is, I know kennel cough is very highly contagous....how exactly is it spread??? Can I spread it from dog to dog just by having contact with a dog that is infected? Can the virus live on clothing????
Thank you for any information anyone can give me......I felt so bad for this poor little guy today he seemed like he felt so sick....
Have a great night

My 10 year old Cocker Spainel has Hypothyroidism and really bad anxiety kinda just like her mommy....but I have been using "Melatonin" to help me sleep and I have to say it works wonders...
"Bailey" is on Xanax for her anxiety and was wondering if she could take the "Melatonin"...It seems to work really well for me and it is a supplement instead of a prescription medication so maybe it would be healthier for her to take....Just a thought...
If anyone knows anything about using supplements for our dogs I would really appreciate any information you can give me...
Thanks so much

I understand not having the money to take the family dog to the vet....I am on disability and was out of work for 2 plus years before that.
The one thing you have to understand is that the dog is in pain even though he is not really showing it...Dogs don't show pain like we do...and even if it is your choice to have him put to sleep...there is a charge for that at the vets office...
As far as his nails, if you can't cut them yourself, you can take him to the groomer and they will cut them for about 10 dollars...
You can call your local animal shelters some of them have vets offices in them that will charge a small fee and some of them even use a sliding scale that goes by how much money you actually make...
Good Luck to youView Thread

It seems cool for them to wear and if I do have to pull them while walking, like off the street if a car is coming I know I can without hurting them...
My beagle had a neck injury once so after that I never used collars unless they are just for show...like a christmas one for example...but I never connect a leash to them...View Thread

I went through the same thing a few years ago with my dog who was very ill...I live in Pennsylvania where is is also the law to get the rabies shot....
Although I did not get him vaccinated for anything else and my vet agreed that he was to sick to deal with vaccinations he did give him a 3 year rabies so that he would never have to get him a rabies shot again...
The only thing about them not having their rabies shot (accept for it being the law) is that groomers and kennels and such will not take the dog without proof of shots...
My cocker spainel has hypothyroid and she gets her shots without any problems...
Good Luck I hope you get the answers you need

We just had some yard work done and I do believe when she was chasing the mailman (the only person in the world she does not like) after he leaves..because she is freaking out, I usually let her out after he is long gone and she runs along the fence barking...well my guess would be she ran into one of the branches that were cut down last night...
She is on 3 meds, 2 drops and 1 pill, I am planning to leave tomorrow to visit my daughter and grandchildren and will have to take her with me because my Mom who usually watches her is afraid she would not be able to keep up with her meds...I think she is just afraid that things would get worse...and I understand that...My Mom is 71 years old and always takes execellent care of Bailey when I visit my daughter...
I have a few questions I hope someone will help me with....
1. My daughter has a golden retriever...Male but neutered...last time they were together they got into a fight...Joey walked past Bailey and she attacked him..Joey has a really great personality so he just walked away from her...what can I do so that nothing bad will happen??
2. My grandson lays all over joey and I am a bit afraid that Bailey won't be a patient with him
3. I think I gave Bailey to much of the ATROPINE, she was suppose to have 1 drop and I think I gave her 3...will that hurt her????
4. She is on Rimadyl for pain....She is also prescribed xanax for anxiety...I would really like to kinda give her xanax around the clock so she relaxes and her eye can heal....is that a good idea and can it be mixed with RIMADYL????
Oh...and last but not least...I am getting really sick and tired of people questioning me about how much I spend on taking my dog to the vet..I am really tired of having to explain why it costs so much everytime I have to take Bay to the vet...Bay has other health issues and we go about every 8 weeks...her meds are really cheap...like 10.00 a month.
Todays visit was a little over 300.00, is this about normal for a visit for an ulcer in her eye????
Thank you in advance for any answers you can give me ot advice
Thanks

I actually had a lot more done than her eye...her anal glands were expressed...and bloodwork for her T4 levels...so I think I got a bargin,,,,because of her breed they check pressure levels every couple of months....
I was thinking of the babygate so you read my mind I thought I would let her sleep on the bed I sleep on and only take her out when I can be on top of everything...
I gave her all her meds this morning she seems to be fine....
Thanks again for all your answers....

I know there are things you can buy at places like Petco or Petsmart that are natural and can calm your dog down at night.
My dog was out on xanax by her vet because of anxiety...that calms her down....she is on the .50mg dose but I only give her half because if I give her the .50mg she gets really wired...

You are in my thoughts and prayers...I am so sorry for your loss...
I do remember when I went to the vets office after Mikey had passed and the hardest thing I went through was that after I walked out that door I would never see him again...so I didn't want to leave...I just could not imagine not seeing him...It was like a bad dream and I was praying I would wake up and he would be right next to me...
It took months for me to realize he was not going to wake me up in the middle of the night to go out...when I would get up in the middle of the night I would be very quiet so that I would not wake him...then I would realize....he was not there to wake up...
I pray that you have peace...
God Bless You

I will be thinking of you tomorrow, I will have you in my prayers..
I lost Mikey the beagle dog last September to lymphomia, I have to say the only thing that brings me comfort is that I believe he did not suffer and that an angel must have been with him when he passed (he was in the ICU at the doggy oncoligists office) His words of compassion also helped me through..at 9:00am Mikey was stable and at 9:30 he passed...the vet told me he just slept away...
As I write this I have a lump in my throat, I miss him so much...I have bad days when I hold his ashes in one hand and his picture in the other and cry...I think what we go through when we lose out much loved furbabies is very normal to pet owners who feel their pets are like children...although I have come across some people who even question getting their animals their yearly shots much less get them chemo...To them I say....Look you may not agree with me but I know I don't agree with you!!!!
I got Mikey when he was 2 years old, I worked in a shelter in the city I live in and I have a really soft spot for beagles...I read his paperwork hie owners filled out as to why they were bringing him in...He was not a good hunting dog...he ran away from the hunters a lot....well he was gun shy...which is common in hunting dogs...he was only 15 pounds...well as I always say Mikey I loved you before I even saw you...I knew he was going to be mine...
His Mommy and Daddy walked through the door and my friends said "thats your beagle"...I took him from his daddys arms I still remember the smell he had...Like fresh shampoo..they bathed him before bringing in..he was still damp.
His "birth mommy and daddy" were so happy knowing I was taking him home...I think they really loved him just really wanted a hunting dog...Mikey was a good hunter but was afraid of a pot dropping on the floor...I put him in his temporary home in the shelter (he needed to be neutered) and checked on him all day...sometimes he was sleeping so I just looked through the glass...at night when I was going home I would get him out and just hold him...
The day he came home my furbaby family was complete...I had 2 other beagles.
Mikey was the last of the beagles....Madeline died very young she had epilepsy and the last seizure she had never stopped and Dopey had cushings...he suffered till I thought it was time to stop the suffering...
I would love to get another beagle, first of all...I am not ready...I still think I am looking to replace Mikey and I know I can't so I just wait till the time is right for me...and I have a cocker spainel who is 10 years old...she has health problems and I wonder if I should wait for her sake....I wonder if she could handle a young beagle...they are a little hyper when they are young...
I am looking forward to reading the other posts..and my prayers are with each and everyone of you who lost a loved one...
God Bless
