It's interesting that you are using Retriever food because my golden retriever was on that from his breeder's kennel, and he developed this black skin syndrome while on it. He has ruled out for hypothroid and Cushing's Disease, which leaves us wonderfing what to feed him. His black skin resolved when I switched him from Retriever dog food to Ainsworth Source, which is very good food, but right now he is starting to have all the symptoms again, with itching, hair thinning, scratching, and the skin is starting to become gray again. I'm at quite a loss to know what to do at this point, because clearly this is going to be an ongoing issue. I did feel that his food was a contributing source, because when I switched him from Retriever initially he got three of the foods that were recalled for Salmonella, and he had severe symptoms from that exposure, too. I'm going to start cooking my own dog food for him and see if that helps.View Thread
