Hello. I'm doing a project on dogs. I was just wondering about breeding. I have heard of some pretty weird crosses like dachshund X Rottweiler. I was just wondering what is the rule of thumb for breeding sizes of dogs together. For example can you breed a 20 pound male dog to a 10 pound female? Can you breed a 3-4 pound dog to another the same size?
Both of my dogs are rescues. I have a 2 year old Yorkie X Chihuahua that was found wondering the streets in Las Vegas when he was 1. I adopted him in February 2012 and lucky for him he had only been in the rescue group for about a month. I think where ever he had originally come from was a pretty good place because he has no issues at all. He loves everyone and every animal. I named him Shaye because it means Gift.
My other dog wasn't as lucky as Shaye. His name is Darwin and he is a 4 year old Jack Russell X Shih Tzu. I work at a pet store and one day this lady came in holding a crate and said that her son bought this dog and he is a horrible dog and she hates him and doesn't what him in her house anymore. She then went on to describe how horrible this dog was and if we didn't take him then she would just leave the crate on the side of the road. Me and the other lady who I worked with looked inside the crate and saw this tiny little terrified puppy. We told her we would take him and she sat the crate on the floor, handed us his vet record and walked away. According to the vet record he was only 10 weeks old. He was so thin you could count the bones in his body just by looking at him. He was also so dehydrated that my vet told me she didn't think he would have survived much longer. He had also been locked in the crate the lady had left him in. You could see scratch and teeth marks like he was trying to dig and chew his way out. I'm also 100% sure they were abusing him both physically and vocally. If you even just coughed he would shake in fear. He was in really bad shape.
As soon as I took him out of that crate and held him we just seemed to bond. I took him home that night and kept him ever since. He is the smartest and best dog ever. He was a perfect puppy, never chewed anything that wasn't his, he slept through the night and he picked up his training like that. He became our stores mascot.
Darwin came into my life at the perfect time. My dad had died a year before and I had just lost my 16 year old shepherd a few months before as well. My life is so much better with him and I couldn't imagine my life without him in it. We did have a lot of issues to over come like separation anxiety but its all worth it. Rescue dogs (and other animals) make some of the best companions. God bless everyone out there who has adopted a rescue or spends there life doing the rescuing.View Thread
I have two 9 day old puppies (they are Mini Dachshund X Chihuahua). The mother (a Mini Dachshund) doesn't have any milk to feed the puppies. One puppy is doing well. He is gaining weight each day and is drinking from the bottle. The other puppy is not doing well at all. He is going up and down between 202-204 grams. The other puppy is 264 grams. He is being tube feed and I am giving him subcutaneous fluids. He isn't as active as the other pup but he is hanging on. My vet and I are stumped as why he is not gaining weight. If anyone has any ideas at all I would appreciate them.
This little guy is a real fighter and I don't want to give up on him.
I have a 13 year old Rottweiler X Boxer (Kacey). She has arthritis in her hips, back and knees. Her back legs are pretty stiff and she sometimes has trouble getting up. She is on Medicam for pain (daily) and also gets cartrophen injections once a month. She is doing well on this combo but I would like to get her off of the medicam and only use it as needed insted of every day.
I found a product called Level 3 Advance Hip & Joint made by Vet's Best. It has Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin & Hyaluronic Acid plus a bunch of other active ingredients.
I know that other products by Vet's Best seem to work as they are supposed to and I know these ingredients are helpfull with arthritis. I was just wondering if anyone has used this product before and how well (or not well) it worked. Or if there was another product that you have tried that helped. Any thoughts or comments would be helpfull.
I have a male Jack Russell cross Shih Tzu who will be turning 2 years old at the end of June. As a young puppy he had some health issues that we found out was caused by allergies. He is allergic to all fish. He is also sensitive to corn, beet pulp fiber and wheat gluten. He has always been a very picky eatter as well. Right now he is eating Taste of the Wild and has been doing well on it.
Lately though he has been vomiting a yellow foamy liquid, has been very itchy all over, has had a bit looser then normal stool that is smelly and the whites of his eyes go red. The stool and the eyes are a common occurance but the vomiting comes and goes and doesn't last more then a day. But when he is vomiting he is very lethargic and doesn't want to eat anything and just sleeps on the couch. At this point his weight is good and when he isn't vomiting his engery level is that of a normal Jack Russell.
Could this be a sign that he is allergic to something else that I am not aware of or could this be a sign he has another medical condition going on?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank youView Thread
