I am 22 and I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 19. I have been on birth control since I was 16 years old (and it masked my symptoms until I was 19 and tired of taking meds). Now, I am suffering from random things and I am determined to find the underlying cause of my problems. I am a senior in college, premed, and I am tired of doctors not looking at the overall picture when treating me.
I have:
Depression/anxiety
IBS
Jaw surgery because my jaw was growing to the side
Sleep apnea
Septal/adenoid surgery for sleep apnea
Nightmares every single night
Exhausted all the time - I could sleep forever if I had the time
Decreased concentration
Joint pain, always cracking and stuff!

Lower back pain
Knee pain
weight gain
Random stomach pain after eating sometimes.
I probably forgot something.
What else do you all have besides PCOS and have any treatments helped??View Thread

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18 right after I got married. I was having excruciating pain in my lower abdomen which ended up to be a cyst that ruptured
I was in denial for a long time that I had this condition when I was diagnosed I was 154 pounds and a newlywed and young I thought nothing could touch me. Well a few years later I am now 23 will be 24 next week I graduated nursing school and I have coming to the realization that I really do have PCOS and I need to gain control of my life. How ever I was wondering the last few months I have been having hot flashes like they are going out of style and my "libido" is way down. Probably because I have gained so much weight in the last 4 years I am just down right depressed. Can anyone give me some insite as to a "diet" I should start following and maybe an exercise regimen I could follow that has given you ladies success!! Thanks so much and good luck to everyone in their PCOS endeavor. We are all strong women and we shall overcome all this
just stay positive!!!Thanks for reading

I have also recently been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and I am taking multiple medications and seeing a Rheumatologist every 6 weeks for that.
I have tried Vaniqua (sp?) in the past but after nearly a year I had nothing to show for the effort but a thinner checkbook.
Does anyone have any suggestions that will not cost a fortune or interact with my RA treatment? I have so many medical bills from the RA and my insurance will not cover anything cosmetic. If I had to I can live with the irregular periods and and weight gain but my self esteem suffers severely from the 5 o'clock shadow. I am a prisoner to my own chin. PLEASE HELP!!!!!View Thread
I am not over weight, I have unwanted hair, I am slowly losing my hair, I am lucky when I have a day with energy, my period never ends (I bleed all the time, cramps off and on), and I have mild depression.
I have tried the birth control pills, the progesterone only birth control pill, and the depo shot.
The BC pills made me sick to my stomach and gave me awful headaches. Found out this is because my body makes more then enough estrogen and pills were pushing it too far.
The progesterone only BC pills did nothing, bad or good. I might as well not have been taking them.
The depo shot has given me a bit more energy and I feel better, but I am still bleeding all the time (maybe a few hours here and there I am not). And the first two weeks after I get the shot I feel like crud.
I was trying the PCOS diet and it was going pretty well until I got TMJ, for the last 2 months I have only been able to eat soup (I have always hated soup and hate it even more now). I can't eat anything that needs a lot of chewing or is hard to chew (for example a ham and cheese sandwich is too much). I just started PT for the TMJ today and it went well. But I am now struggling with the diet because my options are very limited.
I take a low dose pill and vit D for my depression and am currently on Spirlactone for hair issues, and get the depo shot every 3 months.
I am out of ideas.
I am currently in a Masters for Teaching Program which is very intense and am a day camp director and am teaching 2nd grade. So it would be really really nice to get the PCOS a little bit under control. I would love to have a few days were I am not bleeding! That would be oh so wonderful.
Do any of you have any ideas or advice?
I am working with my doctor, but the depo shot was the last drug option at the moment. I meet with my doctor in 2 months to talk about other options, but last time I met with her she didn't seem like she knew what we should do now.
I feel like a lost cause.View Thread
I;m seeing a new GYN in the morning and Im wondering how I can have her give me a full workup for PCOS? Ive been to many Gyn's over my lifetime and none have even checked me for it as being a possible cause of AF being MIA most of my teenage yrs.At age 15 I did go on BC to regulate m-i-a AF's and it did work for yrs. This past yr AF went kinda haywire showing maybe 3-4 times last yr with Nov being my last full blown AF.Ive always been a Plus Size girl so I dont believe the weight is the issue as im having spotting here n there and alot of ovary pains here n there.can I just ask for a full work up with bloow, ultrasound etc?Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question im always confused on what to go over with when seeing a new gyn.Thanks.View Thread
But I'm not "hairy." I actually have an unusually light amount of body hair on the rest of my body. The hairs on my legs are so light that you can barely see them. On top of that, this is a fairly recent problem. I have always had mild facial hair since puberty, but we're talking very mild, light mustache and a few sprouting thick hairs here and there that a tweezer couldn't take care of. But about 10 years ago, the facial hair exploded to the point where I now have thick hairs growing down my cheeks and under my bottom lip. The chin hair is so bad that I have to shave and tweeze every day now. My acne used to only sprout during PMS but now it's become 24/7 and has flared up on my chest and back.
Something's not right here. I'm almost 40 years old and I'm developing more facial hair and acne by the year. So if I don't have PCOS then what? What specialist can I turn to?View Thread
I'm 25 years years old and my husband and I have been TTC for 7 months now. My period does not come at the same time each month, making it a struggle to determine when I'm ovulating. Last month I made an appt. with my gyno. to see if there was anything I could do. I had blood tests drawn on both day 21 and 3 of my cycle. My LH was slightly high on day 21, but my doctor said it could just be because I had ovulated. My day 3 was normal. I had a vaginal ultrasound which sshowed cysts on one of my ovaries. As a result of this she said I might have an atypical case of PCOS. I do not fit the mold, I'm 5'6" and skinny, I do not have diabetes or face acne (I have some back acne does this count?) I will go back in April if I'm not pregnant and might start on Metformin, if nothing happens after a year she will send me to an infertility specialist. I'm also charting my basal body temp. and checking for ovualtion through the test sticks. Does anybody have similar stories or suggestions on things I should try? I would love to hear what you have to say. It seem like everyone I know gets pregnant so easily, while I"m just praying I can get pregnant at this point.View Thread
I went to the doctor a little over a week & a half ago because of this horrible, nasty skin break out that I've had for an entire 6 months. It was on my face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back. I tried every soap and face/body wash there was, even proactiv, and it didn't let up a bit. He put me on an antibiotic twice a day for the 1st 10 days, then a different one I take everyday for probably 6 months, but I'm supposed to check in with him every 2 months to see if it's working. I can already tell it's slowly getting better, but what's been on my mind is that when I go see him again in a month and a half, he wants to test for PCOS. I have always had regular periods before I got pregnant. I have 2 boys now, and before I got pregnant with them, my periods were "perfect." Lasted only 3 days, no cramps, it wasn't heavy, perfect 28 day cycles. After having my 1st son, I started getting cramps & it was heavier. After my 2nd son, they last 4-5 days, I have to wear super tampons with a pad, cramps are aweful, and if it wasn't for birth control, my cycles range 24-35 day cycles & sometimes I get it twice a month or it'll last even an entire week. The past 2 years I've been noticing at random times during my cycle, I get crampy, like AF is here, but she's not. If I know it's ovulation time, I chalk it up to that, but it happens at more random times, where it just can't be ovulation. There have been a handful of times where it got SO painful where I can't get out of bed, and it feels like my uterus is going to explode. One time DH wanted me to go to the ER because of it, but I was stubborn & didn't go. Today, I'm having that same thing. It came out of nowhere! DH & I were ttc baby #3 a couple months ago, but because of some unfortunate events, we have to put that on hold for awhile. I did OPKs and it did give me positive results 2 positive days in a row, then a negative day, then another positive day. I thought that was weird, but, I got a positive anyways. Well, no BFP. Now, back to the dr. saying he wants to test for PCOS. I'm SO confused. I'm 25, I have 2 children, I know I ovulate, I haven't had any problems with my uterus/ovaries before, and he suspects PCOS? I have to say, that about 2 years ago, I lost 35 of the 50 pounds I gained between both pregnancies, but ever since I've been put on BCP (& having some back issues for awhile) I gained 60 pounds in a year. I'm now doing something about this weight gain after I stepped on that scale in the dr's office because I did NOT realize I gained THAT much!!
So with all that being said, could it be possible I have PCOS all of a sudden? I didn't think of asking him if PCOS just pops up like that, because I was taken aback at his suggestion. I guess the #1 thing that kind of makes me go along with his suggestion is the random, painful cramping I'm getting out of nowhere? I don't know. I'm just totally confused with my body lately.View Thread
Anyway, there is my background. Now, I do have a few questions for those who have been dealing with PCOS for a little while longer. How long did it take for your symptoms to lessen? Did anyone try taking birth control to help speed things up? (Side note: Does anyone else's skin break out worse in the following days after they experience a few orgasms?)
Thank you for reading this, I appreciate your time. If anyone has any pointers, tips, advice, I'm open to anything! I also hear there are several different approaches to treating PCOS so I'm interested in how all of you are also taking it on. Thanks again!

I'm new the this and I was wondering has anyone tried the Vitex? I want to do things as naturally as possible. I've been diagnosed with PCOS and it has been extremely hard for my husband and I to conceive. Yes, I'm over weight and trying to loose and make better life style changes. I've done about a 100 hours worth of research on Vitex and still do not have a clear understanding if it is to be taken ON your period of not. I don't have regular periods (maybe 2 a year... maybe). Any suggestions, or experiences are welcomed! Thank you for your time!View Thread

I am 28 years old and I was diagnosed with PCOS about 10 years ago. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for about a year and a half and in that time we have had one miscarriage (in September of 2010). Anyways, I am on day 9 of my cycle and I am experiencing spotting. It is not "heavy" per say, but it does seem like quite a bit to me. Also, I have not been feeling good all day (feeling a little nauseated and dizzy). I am on metformin and besides the bleeding with the miscarriage; I have never had bleeding between periods. I was just wondering if this was normal or if I should contact my PCOS specialist? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've had hypothyroidism since 2008 - that was after 5 years of unexplainable weight gain, despite diets and excercise (with nutritionist & trainer). I've been on Synthyroid 50 mcg since then. Up until recently I was also on Metformin 1500MG. During the past year I've lost ~ 30lbs...not quite sure how as I gave up on nutritionist, diets, trainers, and have not been excercising as much as I should in recent months due to back surgery over the summer, yet I'm still dropping weight - not at alarming rates, but it doesn't make sense.
Recently I saw an endocrinologist. I had seen one years ago for PCOS and when I gained all that weight but had a bad experience and decided to stick with my PCP & Gyn. The endo checked all the usual stuff plus Cortisol.
Of all the labs I've had done this past month, all were normal,e xcept for the following:
CORTISOL AM0.4
THYROID PEROXIDASE AB (TPO)223.0
I will note that the Cortisol test done was the dexamethasone...not sure if it is so low because of that and if that is normal...even though the normal range on the test result is 6.7-22.6. The TPO normal range is 0-9.0.
This endo called me yesterday with the results and left a message saying everything was normal and I could call him if I wanted to talk about coming off of the synthroid (which I mentioned at my appt).
The hospital I see all of my drs thru uses an online thing that posts all lab results, which is how I know the above. When I hard his message I was surprised that he said they were normal...
So, I'm not sure if the Cortisol is low only because of the dexa (whic supposedly is used to test for high cortisol), or if it is infact abnormal as the lab indicates...
Also, I've had a lot of muscle and joint problems recently...arthritis in hip & back, herniated discs, bursitis, and the list could go on. Even with surgery and 4 mos aggressive PT, the orthopaedic symptoms are not improving...
Could all of this somehow be connected and could there be some other underlying issue?
I'm really tired and frustrated as I live in NYC and see great doctors at great hospitals...but after years of not feeling well, and the last YEAR of waking up every 2-3 hrs in hip pain (supposed bursitis) for over a year, I feel like I'm going to scream unless something gives...
Any thoughts from anyone with similar symptoms/issues?View Thread
Has anyone else gone through this or is anyone else currently going through this? I feel like 11 to 12 months without a period is a little much. In between the time that my long period from 2009 stopped to the time that my period completely stopped this past February, I only had 2 periods...so, I've really only had a couple of periods within the last couple of years. What should I do? I'm an uninsured, broke college gal! Should I just ride it out?View Thread
P.S. I work for a very small company (4 people), and there's no one at work that would understand. They don't even really know what's going on. It's driving me crazy pretending like I'm normal!View Thread
