Short version: ITS A BOY!!! Lucas Paul was born on Wednesday December 11th at 7:59pm. He weighed 7 pounds even and was 20.5". So much for the almost 9 pounder they were predicting. He is my smallest baby (though not by much, they were all within 13oz of each other). Took us almost 24 hours to decide on his name.
Long Story: I woke up at 4:45 am on the 11th to some strong but irregular contractions that subsided by about 7am or so. I had an appointment that morning at 9:30. My Bp was 150/90 at the beginning of the appointment. OB (again not my usual OB) checked me and I was still only dilated to 1 cm so she decided to try to strip my membranes, which was incredibly painful and according to her, not entirely successful.
Did another Bp check at the end of the appointment which was 152/98 so I was sent to labor and delivery for monitoring. Almost as soon as I got hooked up to the monitors my Bp stabilized but contractions started about every 5 minutes and were increasingly painful. Baby looked good on the monitors and blood pressure was staying low. I really thought they were going to send me home. But, when my blood work came back, it showed low platelets again (had this to an extreme with my 5 year old). Since I was now at risk for bleeding/hemorrhage, I was admitted.
We did a repeat blood draw and my platelets actually went up to 100k and the anesthesiologist agreed that it was safe to get an epidural (yay). So, we did that and it was smooth sailing after that. Definitely my easiest delivery with the least drama! Took about 9 hours to fully dilate, but I did it on my own, did not end up needing pitocin or anything. I was ready to push right during the nurses shift change, so I had to deal with a ton of pressure while I waited for the new nurse to get her stuff together.
I pushed twice and the nurse was yelling for me to stop and to get the doctor. He was crowning and I had to wait for the OB to get his stuff together. They all seemed to move so slow in the moment lol. Then another 1/2 push later and he was out.
He is absolutely adorable! Long and skinny. He was perfectly pink when he came out and because he came so fast, no cone head at all. Apgars were 9/10..
We came home Friday afternoon and have been adjusting to life at home with three kids! I feel so blessed to finally have my rainbow baby! My older kids just can't get enough of him.View Thread
Had my appointment this morning. Bp was up again at 150/100 so they sent me to l&d for monitoring. Bp stabilized and baby looks great, but labs came back to show slight protein in my urine and low platelet counts so OB decided today was the day. I've been contracting on my own and at last check dilated to 3. Did repeat bloodwork to check platelets and if they stay low chances are I won't be able to get an epidural.
Heck! It's basically the middle of December already! Time is a crazy thing, especially when pregnant. Which, I still am, unfortunately!! I was really hoping to go into labor over the weekend. I was super busy and did a ton of walking but no such luck
Heather - congrats on the new table/chairs. That's an awesome gift. Our table is a family heirloom on DH's side and I despise it. It's a total toe buster! Oh well!
My update... yep. Still pregnant. 39 weeks tomorrow and so ready to be done. My BP issue from last week seems to have dropped a wee bit, but over the weekend was still a bit higher than my baseline for this pregnancy. Other than that, I hurt all over and can't sleep more than about an hour at a time. Also getting some irregular semi-painful contractions and cramping. Hoping and praying that I'm 2-3 cm at my appointment on Wednesday and plan to beg for an induction, lol. I have too much going on next week, I'd love to have baby Thursday and be home before the week starts. I would also love a week at home with baby while my older kids are still in school so we can get settled in before the complete madness of christmas break and celebrations kick in. We'll see what happens.
Pray to the labor gods for me, ladies. LOL!!View Thread
Appointment Update: I need to vent. I had my 38 week appointment yesterday. Once again, I had to see a different OB as my usual was not available this week. I really dislike the OB I saw yesterday. He's very dismissive and frankly, an arrogant ass.
Anyway, my BP was high at 134/90... norm for me for this pregnancy has been about 120/70. He made mention of it and told the nurse to retake the BP at the end of the appointment.
He took my fundal height measurment and kind of raised his eyebrows but wouldn't tell me the actual measurement. He made no mention of my fluid levels or anything.
I asked about induction next week (my regular OB and I have been discussing it). And he looked at me like I had 5 heads. I'm currently 1 cm and about 30% effaced, so not much. His comment was... it'd be a real shame for someone who's had two vaginal deliveries to end up with a c0section. Well, if he'd looked at my history, he'd see that both of those deliveries were inductions... the second of which I started out 0cm and 0% effacement. And he was born in less than 5 hours. And I don't really give a crap about vaginal vs c/s deliveries. If I end up with c/s, so be it.
But the final straw was after the nurse took my second BP. It was a bit higher instead of lower at 138/92. Nurse stepped out to tell OB and he said ok, tell her she can leave. Didn't say anything to me, but wrote in my chart pre-eclampsia watch. Seriously?
Now, if he'd looked ay my history, he would see I have a history of pre-eclampsia and rapid-onset of HELLP. And with my son I had an "unusual presentation of symptoms". There was no extra protein in my urine sample, but I also never had any with my son and that's when I had HELLP. In my past pregnancies when I was showing signs of Pre-E, I was at the office three times per week for monitoring and NSTs. This OB didn't want to see me before my next appointment, next Wednesday.
Luckily my sister is a nurse and can help me keep an eye on my BP. If it stays elevated over the weekend, I will call my regular OB on Monday and see what he thinks.
I also have another u/s scheduled for tomorrow morning for a growth/fluid check, so we will be able to check on baby, which is reassuring. And I also plan to ask if someone can check my BP while I'm there.
I know how scary pre-e/HELLP is. My labor and delivery with my DS was a terrifying experience. I'm just really bothered by how non-chalant this other doctor was about it. My regular OB is much more cautious, and also knows/considers my history. I have been struggling with a lot of anxiety about this baby that seems to get worse the closer I get to my due date. Yesterday certainly didn't help any.
Heather - congrats to your cousinf on the baby! And yay for kicks! Your pregnancy seems to be flying by!
We did a little black Friday shopping, nothing crazy and didn't get up early or anything. I was able to get some really good deals on some clothes for the kids at Children's Place. I am getting so antsy to by this little one gender-specific clothing!! That's what I've told everyone I want for Christmas for the baby... clothes! I also did little cyber-monday shopping yesterday. DH has been wanting a laptop. He's self-employed and also highly involved with our church and two athletic associations with our kids' school (actually just started a basketball league for k-2nd grade girls). Anyway, he spends a ridiculous amount of time in his office on the computer. THe hope is with a laptop, at least he might be able to sit in the living room and pretend he's spending quality time with us!! LOL. Poor guy. It's just a very busy time of the year for him and I think the anxiety of throwing a new baby in the mix is starting to get to him.
My update: 38 weeks today. Boy am I ready to have this baby! At my appointment last week I was a finger tip dilated and soft, so hoping for some progress over the past week. I go back for my regular appointment tomorrow, so we'll see. If I've progressed, we may discuss possible induction next week. I also have another u/s on Friday to check fluid and baby's size.View Thread
Good Monday morning ladies! Hope everyone had a great weekend. We're gearing up for a festive Thanksgiving and looking forward to a 4 day weekend!
My update: 36w6d. I am tired, lol. This weekend the exhaustion hit like a ton of bricks. I think I can attribute it to an extremely stressful two weeks at work catching up to me. I sure hope it doesn't stick around. I need my energy back to some extent!
I had my 36w check up last Thursday. The OB (not my usual OB) did not order another scan to check on fluid, I have mixed feelings about that. I thought I'd be happy to have one less appointment to fit into the schedule. But, it's made me a little anxious.
Also had my first cervical check. Absolutely no progress. Closed and thick. Boo! I was hoping all the pressure I've been feeling would have caused something. Oh well. I know it doesn't necessarily mean anything anyway.
I am ready for baby! Put the final touches on the nursery this weekend and washed up all the laundry last week. I have all of the essentials for this little one. Now to wait until s/he decides to come. My OB will consider induction at 39 weeks as long as I'm at least starting to dilate. So, we'll see. I was hoping to avoid induction this time around (was induced for medical reasons with my first two), but I don't know that I will have the willpower!!
Hope you have a great week and a wonderful Thanksgiving. There's so much to be thankful for this year.
Oh, I wanted to add... my sweet DH surprised me with three new trees for our yard. Two to honor the two babies we lost last year and one for our new LO-to-be (God willing!). It was such a sweet gesture. He struggles with guilt because he feels like he didn't do enough to support me during our losses. They are supposed to be planted today, so it will be a bit of an emotional evening for us.View Thread
Heather - I'm glad to hear your OB plans to take another peek at baby girl. Sounds like she isn't too concerned, but I'm always thankful when doctors err on the side of caution.
Ani - looking forward to Friday! Hope the LO cooperates for you. And I hope your heartburn doesn't stick around!
My update: 36w today. Had an u/s last Thursday. Fluid is holding steady at over 27cm, baby looks good (and squished!) and was estimated to weigh 5lb13oz. Not sure if the OB will order another u/s or not yet. I have an appointment on Thursday but it is with a different OB in the practice because mine is on vacation. It always makes me nervous to see a different OB. It's not that I don't trust this dr (he's actually the one that delivered my DS), but I am really comfortable with my regular OB and we have a really great relationship. It doesn't help that I will probably get my first cervical check at this appointment and that always makes me anxious for some reason.
Also, had my baby shower on Saturday. It was awesome. My mom and aunt crocheted a couple blankets for baby. If we could post pics on here, I would. They made one with owls on it that is the most adorable thing I've ever seen.
I have been stalking you on here and on FB today not-so-patiently awaiting news of your little bean. Hope all is well... I'm dying to know if Carson is going to have a little brother or sister!!View Thread
Heather - I am so excited for your u/s today!! Darn time zones! I'm on Eastern time. Can't wait to hear if you have a little guy or gal in there. I'm sticking with my original guess of a girl.
Ani - I think the month between visits in brutal! I liked the reassurance of hearing the heartbeat and knowing all was well. Even now, I've been going every week alternating between my appointments and the u/s's and it still feels like time drags on but still seems to fly by at the same time.
My update: 35 weeks today, 35 days to go! Had an appointment with my OB last Thursday. Good news is I'm not measuring 6 weeks ahead any more, it's down to two because baby has dropped pretty signficantly. Bad news is the pressure on my cervix is immense! Yesterday was pretty painful. Walking around is hard and when I rest I get some pretty intense braxton hicks.
Next u/s is this Thursday for a fluid level check and a growth check.
My baby shower is this Saturday. Looking forward to celebrating with my close friends and family!View Thread
