Hi, I'm sorta lurking cause I'm expecting a baby boy Christmas Day by adoption, but I also work in health insurance and thought I would post some tips in refrence to insurance and birth.
1) ALWAYS request an itimized bill from your hospital and check it. Especialy if you have a baby boy. Some hospitals auto bill for Cerc regardless if it was performed or not, or you might be billed for an Epi when you didn't have one. etc. If you find a mistake, call the hospital billing department, they can fix it, even if they already sent the org to the insurance.
2) You have to call your HR department (if the insurance is through work) AND the insurance company to add your new child to the policy. Usually within 30 days. it doesn't hurt to call before hand to ask the timeframe, or check the insurance or HR website.
Making sure you do these 2 things can save you THOUSANDS of dollars in hospital charges.
and 3) - (not really insurance related, but is hospital bill related) If you have OTC stuff that you can take with you to the hospital to take, do so. especialy if you will have to pay a percentage of the cost of your stay. Take your own prenatals, tylonol, asthma meds, breast pads, etc. unless you want the hospitals. Be sure you tell the nurse you have OTC meds and when you can take them so they can write it down on your chart. It's not uncommon for a hopsital to charge crazy $ for a single dose of something you could have brought with you instead. I have seen claims with prenatal vit single dose (one pill) be $25.View Thread
my son is due Christmas Day. I havent gotten anything for him for Christmas, but my family may get him something, depending on how comfortable they are with the unknown aspect. We're expecting by adoption (I am lurking on here for the non actual pregnancy aspects of exptecting ) So there's a slim possability that we will walk out of the hospital empty handed. I know a lot of my family are guarding their hearts against that. We haven't had a baby shower fro the same reason. We plan on having a meet the baby party in Jan instead.
I have made mental notes on things I would like to get him if he does make an appearance before christmas. Mostly stuff for "babys first christmas"View Thread
I work for an insurance company and this is EXACTLY what to do Or check the website, it should say when dependants can be added. Some companies also will "pre add" the child if you know gender. But you still have to call after the baby is born to let them know DOB. Never assume just cause there's a claim for labor and birth that they will auto add the new baby. Often claims are processed by the automated system which doesn't know to do that.

Lurking (expecting via adoption) and I work in an health insurance company and I have to agree with you 100% on the cost and the mistakes! My department is actually called "Corrected claims" and run into these daily! I still giggle at circumcisions for girls, labor and birth for the husbands, prostate exames for women, etc. : )

oh and I thought you'd find this amusing- my husband was reading over my shoulder and said "1 up? like in Super Mario Brothers?" I said "yes dear, they're having a mario theamed party and the baby is going to be dressed as a 1 up mushroom" He of course thought it was the best idea ever.View Thread
