My situation has changed dramatically since my last post. PSA elevated to 26 as of January 2013 from 16 10 months earlier. Gleason score (3+3) as of last count (1 1/2) years ago. Dr. Recommends prostectomy surgery ASAP and informs me that my chance of being cured is around 30%, with maximum amount of nerve damage. (meaning, erection problems). This news is not encouraging and tends to inspire a (what the hell) attitude. Is there anyone out there with better, more encouraging information that I can bring to the table? Also, what does (pre-op) involve? Surgery scheduled for June 13th 2013.

My husband, age 59, just had his annual check-up. He has had some symptoms of enlarged prostate, but for the past three years his psa levels were around .56 or so. This year, however they are at 5.2...a dramatic increase. The doctor couldn't detect any abnormalities during a digital exam, but notes that he isn't a urologist and doesn't have the experience they would have.
My husband followed the option of waiting 3 months to have a retest and it came back as 5.9 today. He was told they faxed the information/results to a urologist and to 'address it aggressively.' His appointment is in 10 days.
What can he likely expect at that appointment, and it is okay that I go, too, right? That seems like another significant increase again, isn't it? How concerned should we be? He seems to be calmer than I am, but maybe he's just better at dealing with this.
Thanks for your input!

I am 1.5 weeks after the biopsy and the results are in that I have 2 of the 12 grafts that came back positive for cancer at 10 and 15% and have a gleason score of 3+3(6) which is an average score. I'm still in shock over the results and need to figure out if I go the maintenance and careful watch method or something more radical. I'm trying to do as much research out there as possible and am frustrated, I think talking with others or joining a support group is also something I need to do, thanks for your timeView Thread

So here we are.....
Some women might be fine with it, and some men might feel if you love him than just deal with it and be thankful you still have him. I agree with all of that, but the problem is I have a VERY high sex drive and I'm 40. I love my husband so much but I'm having a hard time staying faithful. I did stray and I confessed b/c of the guilt.
I wanted him to say that I could go out of the marriage now and then to fill the need I have. its just sex....Its him I love...but he loves me very much and doesn't want to share me.
We have tried toys, strap ons etc.... but nothing is replacing what I am missing.
We are going to seek counseling but I wanted to see if there were other couples having the same issues and what did you do about it?View Thread

He gave my husband several suggestions, namely a referral to a urologist or wait 3 months and test over to see if it is still elevated. Our doctor did mention cancer (yikes!), and if it is cancer at this point we wouldn't know if it was slow growing or aggressive. His concern was if the test was accurate that the jump was so dramatic. My husband opted for the retest in 3 months and our doctor said he thought that was an acceptable choice, but we could change our mind at any time after we talked it over and did our own research.
My question...is that a good choice do you feel? It is difficult for me because he doesn't really want to talk about it much and definitely won't let me share anything I read about it with him...prefers to do his own research, and doesn't want me to talk to others about it. He did tell me a few people he was okay with me talking to, but as his wife, I'm concerned/worried. I know it is his body and I respect that, but we have been married for 34 years and it affects me, too.
If you have any insight or encouragement for me, I would love to hear your thoughts. I am really trying to respect him and his privacy. I would want the same from him. Thanks!View Thread

The Urologist scheduled me for a CAT Scan and Bone Scan. Results are NOT in yet. Now several questions have occurred:
1.) Should I even do anything at my age?
2.) Should I just do a watchful waiting?
3.) How effective are radiation pellets compared to a regular radiation treatment? And are the side effects of both methods?
4.) Should I go through the pain and suffering of a operation and its after effects, IF that is the doctor's recommendation?
5.) How effective is a good solid vegetarian diet to combat Prostate cancer?
In the last 3 months, I have given up 100% of alcohol consumption. I was not a big drinker. Two glasses of wine or beer per day.
Also reduced my sugar, fats & oil consumption by 85%. Very little red meat, mostly salt water fish. Prior to the last PSA test and
many years before, my diet has been rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruit.

My boyfriend had his prostate removed December 5, 2011, and, in the months prior to surgery, I often visited this site. If anyone has any questions about the months pre-surgery,the days post-surgery, and the year (and counting) of rehabilitation, I'd love to pay it forward by helping out. When he was diagnosed, we had been dating only nine months. (I'm 33.) I'm happy to share stories of the good, the bad, the ugly (and the funny) as well as some advice that I received from others, counsel that his doctor didn't give him -- but later told him was good to follow (i.e. taking Viagra, Cialis, et al a month prior to surgery and for almost a year after).
Happy New Year. Take care.View Thread
