Hey everyone, hopefully among you is someone knowledgeable who could answer a couple of questions I have...
I've been struggling with a problem that started small — apnea — and got big. Sleep deprivation, depriving my wife of sleep, damaging my health and wellbeing, both physical and mental.
The problem is that I can't really afford to go to a doctor. Both of us work, but in these times we're just making ends meet, and a doctor's visit (or 3), along with prescription costs... That's a financial load that I can't take.
Health is of the utmost importance — I know. And it is a messed-up world where a man can't get help for a medical condition, even though he works long hours and pays his taxes. Maybe I'm a bit of a socialist at heart... But anyway. I was searching Google for traditional cures, or some sort of devices that would help me stop snoring, and I came across this — a review of something called a Zquiet mouthpiece" http://www.topsnoringmouthpieces.com/reviews/zquiet/
It's an "MAD", which stands for mandibular advancement device, which is, in turn, a really fancy way of saying that it pulls your jaw forward while you sleep, so that it doesn't relax and sink down too much, blocking your airways.
Anyway, this one seems better than most because most are "boil and bite", which is what it sounds like — you have to boil the device, then stick it into your mouth, bite it to mold it, etcetera... This seems a lot simpler, because it's one size fits all. That can be just as big a minus as a plus, though.
What I wanted to ask you all was — do any of you have any experience with this Zquiet, or some other "mandibular advancement devices"? I'm asking because I don't want to go dropping something like $80 on something that I don't know works. Hearing from people who have actually used this stuff would go a long way towards helping me make a decision. My wife and I would both appreciate any advice that helps us, because lately we've even begun to sleep apart (she needs her sleep, and my snoring doesn't let her get that) — and that's one thick red line that I want to un-cross.

This may seem like a wild guess at first but have you ever been checked for sleep apnea? While I admit that not everything fits, some of the things that you describe certainly fit the bill and it might offer you a quick way to remedy your situation. I have no idea what the problem might be but I could see where this would drive you absolutely insane. I feel for you, I love the suggestions from Atti because instead of just saying 'remain positive' it offers you some good suggestions on how to (possibly) make a difference. I am in the 'wake me up camp' which seemed unfair at first because I felt that if one of us was miserable — why should the other be miserable (she did not like that answer either). I feel as though with some recent changes I have made I am able to share a bed with my partner again. But it got so bad that me snoring would negatively impact both of us.View Thread
At first I was thinking hypnagogic jerks (the feeling of an involuntary myoclonic twitch that happens just as we're beginning to fall asleep) but I don't think that would explain all the behavior. If it is sleep paralysis it is a form that I have never even read about before — here is hoping that someone else has the answer.View Thread
