I've never had a problem with sleeping up until 6 weeks ago. I used to sleep like a rock, I would fall asleep within minutes and not much would wake me up. Sure, I might have had the occasional night from time to time when I couldn't sleep, but never anything like this. It's literally like my conscious mind just won't let go.
My health related issues started a few months ago when I began having PVCs (Premature Ventricle Contractions) or heart palpitations. The doctor did an EKG and a 24 hour heart monitor in late May, all of which came back as showing nothing "wrong" with my heart. So the doctor put me on low doses of Metoprolol and Buspirone to try to help with palpitations and anxiety. I took it for a couple weeks, but felt terrible on the medication and it didn't seem to help. So I stopped the medication around the first part of June. The same time as the other medications i was prescribed Omeprazole which I didn't start taking right away as I didn't really think it was an issue. I also gave up regular coffee in early June, I now drink only 1 cup of decaf coffee in the morning. The rest of the day I only drink water.
After stopping the Metoprolol and Buspirone, i began taking some over the counter supplements of Magnesium-Citrate and Relora (herbal anxiety relief). Which quite honestly did more for my blood pressure than anything else. I had been taking the over-the-counter supplements for a little over a week and hadn't noticed any sleep disturbances or anything of that nature.
I then began taking the Omeprazole that was prescribed earlier because I thought maybe I was having some indigestion. Two days after I started the Omeprazole I began having sleeping problems. During that time I had not considered the Omeprazole to be the cause of any sleep problems so I continued to take it along with my supplements. During this time, I would have good nights and bad nights sometimes I would sleep fine other nights I wouldn't sleep at all.
The sleeping problems have gotten worse, to the point where I can't fall asleep at night and stay asleep. Sometimes things like zzzquil will help but sometimes they don't. At this point I was exhausted, sometimes I would go 2 straight days without any sleep. Sometimes I wasn't sure if I was sleeping or not. My blood pressure has been back on the rise.
I went back to the doctor and she gave me a prescription for Prozac (10mg), she believes this to be anxiety related. That was two weeks ago. She also gave me a short prescription of Xanax (.25mg) to help me sleep.
The Xanax didn't really help much at first, when I would take one pill I would actually feel like I was having an anxiety attack laying in bed.
I called the doctor and she said to take two Xanax. Two did the trick mostly and would help me sleep, usually for 5 hours or so unless my son or wife would disturb me and wake me up. The mornings felt like a hangover, unless I was able to sleep in longer, then it wouldn't be so bad.
I stopped taking the Magnesium and Relora a couple weeks ago, hoping that maybe something with that was causing the insomnia, but nothing changed. I also stopped taking the Omeprazole about 4-5 days ago hoping that was the cause, but I haven't noticed much difference. The doctor just yesterday increased my Prozac to 20mg a day, but I'm nervous if the Prozac is adding to my insomnia, it could get worse (although I'm not sure how).
I'm desperate at this point. I just want to be able to get a good nights sleep, and to lay down like I used to. I've tried EVERYTHING, good sleep hygiene, yoga, relaxation techniques, ect. I'm just at my whits end. I feel like a lab rat experimenting with myself to try and figure out what's going on. I don't want to have to rely on something like Xanax to help me sleep.View Thread
