In our current issue Smash star Uma Thurman tells us why she keeps her two (soon to be three!) kids center stage in her life, how she helps new parents give babies a healthy start, and why she thinks "balance" isn't all it's cracked up to be. -- WebMD the Magazine

My favorite tip from Mrs. Obama? That parents should not be afraid or intimidated about asking -- telling! -- their kids' school that they want nutritious foods on the menu for lunch -- not junk food, not empty calories.
Have you tried this at your child's school? What happened?View Thread
But I like the idea of thinking about it every day -- research shows that gratitude is a key component of happiness and a daily practice would help cultivate that!View Thread
Granted, he doesn't have a lot wrong with him even though he's nearly 77 but, occasionally he'll have problems after eating that makes ME think he's got some kind of stomach problem going on. He refuses to see a Dr. but, knowing him ... it's because he's AFRAID!!! I doubt he'd ever admit that but, I think he figures that "no news is good news" and as long as he stays away from a Dr. they can't find anything wrong with him.
Men are very strange that way ... they DO tend to think they're bullet proof. I can't MAKE HIM go to a Dr. but sure wish sometimes I COULD!!!View Thread

I understand that you are looking for a "hero" who has done wonders for their community but I need to nominate my individual hero. My hero is Dr. Mary Macedonio.
Please bear with me as I explain. I have always suffered from minor depressive episodes. Aproximatley two years ago I lost my job as a mortgage underwriter due to the economy. That was the beginning of the near end for me. I also have health issues that were worsening thus heading me into a downward spiral and ultimely ending me in a severe depressive state near suicide. Through the workings of the universe Dr. Mary was brought into my life. I have been in therapy in the past but never experienced the results that I am having now. I have been seeing Dr. Mary for the last four months. I have never seen the improvement through my other therapists as I see it with her. After reviewing journal entries from as recent as November of last year where I was borderline suicidal I am now looking forward to my life and how I can participate in improving the quality of it. Dr. Mary's approach is to treat the whole person not just the current mental disorder. I am now on the right track to complete health, mental and physical. To wrap this up, without Dr. Mary's help and direction I dont know where I would be even a year from now.
This is why Dr. Mary Macedonio is "My Hero"!!
Sincerely,
Phyllis AlsterbergView Thread

It took me four years and two doctors, after the accident, to get her where she was moderately free from pain. Because what really worked for her was narcotic pain medications, I had two doctors prescribing MS Contin and Hydrocodone. They say this is wrong, but I cannot find any where in any law or regulation that this is illegal in anyway.
The problem was neither one was willing to give her what was needed. So I used them both. The total medications were: 160 MG MS Contin Twice a day and Eight (
Hydrocodone 7.5/500 MG and 3-10 mg Diazepam. (I know that the 4000 MG of Aceteminephine is at the very max. someone should take daily. This is what worked for her and she was very close to being totally pain free.
What happened was this one doctor decided to check the Az state website that monitors narcotic prescriptions. He decided that because my wife was getting prescriptions from another doctor she was abusing narcotics. He immedialtely stopped prescribing the Rx's. Which wouldn't have been all that bad but he faxed the information to her other doctor who also immediately cancelled all her presciptions. This doctor nor the other doctor ever talked to me or my wife. They had their office managers tell us what they were doing. The first doctor also faxed this information to every pharmacy in our area.
The web site the state has is to monitor the use of narcotic prescriptions and is to be used for the patients care and evaluation, not to label them abusers as this doctor has done. As you can see the amount of the medications she received was about what one doctor would normally prescribe for her condition. I have read what other patients have been prescribed and my wifes is no more or less that what they are prescribed. We were originally under the assumption that the other doctor knew what the first doctor was prescribing. That was why she gave us the exact same prescription that we were getting from the first doctor. If not, what was the point?
I have filed a complaint with the D.O. board in Arizona for the misuse of the information the CSPMP site makes available. The manager of the site told me that the way he used the information is a class 6 felony. I am also filing a civil complaint against him for the invasion of privacy, slander and libel. I would like some input about what is considered abuse. Is there a limit to a prescription that a doctor can prescribe? Am I wrong in filing the complaint and the civil action and will I win or lose? Anyone with the same problem please let me know. My e-mail is Jgundelach@msn.com .View Thread

1 cup walnuts
1 cup golden flax seed (chop in blender, more nutritional this way)
1 cup sesame seeds
dried mixed fruit - you can find pouches of mixed dried berries in most grocery stores, Welch's makes a good mix (blueberries, raisens, cherries, etc,). Whole Foods carries great dried/dehydrated fruit!
Combine and store in air tight container. This is great in yoghurt or on a salad. It's a cornucopia of textures and flavors that will satisfy any oral fixation for crunchy, sweet, salty and healthy!View Thread
Although I'm a product junkie, I'm no stranger to DIY beauty treatments--sometimes I make my own body scrub. What about you? Do you have a special go-to beauty treat that whip up when you just can't make it to the spa or when you just need a little pick-me-up?
If so, post it here--you could win a gift card to Whole Foods. (And let me know what you think if you try our papaya mask.) I'm looking forward to adding some new DIY beauty recipes to my roster!View Thread

As for the skin article, I circled back to the writer, her expert for the story, Dr. Lisa Ginn, and the medical reviewer, Dr Karyn Grossman. Dr Ginn says, "The simple answer is that although sebum and inflammation originate from in the skin, make-up left on the face can occlude the skin, making a barrier that causes excess oil and bacteria to accumulate within the pores. The result is enlarged pores from build-up of excess skin and oil along with inflammation." Dr. Grossman adds: "Sleeping with oil-based makeup can cause breakouts and clog pores."
In that short, tippy sort of article, we didn't get into how the pores clog (whether from under the skin or from the top down) or expand, though, again, we could have added more detail about how that happens.
Bottom line: We aim for clarity, and it's a good reminder to the writers and editors at WebMD the Magazine to keep an eye on ways we can explain not just the what but also the how and the why about a medical fact — since it's not always clear to simply state the "what" and leave it at that.
Thanks again.View Thread

It is safe (no cars, sand, gravel or ice) and you can jump on it any time, day or night. Also, cycling is much easier on the joints and the cardio/ aerobic benefits are well documented.
For me, this workout is a winner on all counts, and the next best thing to riding outdoors until the warm weather returns!

Now that I'm 51 and my gut has been diagnosed as chronic IBS for the past 10 years, and all sorts of other health issues have crept up, I taught myself to eat yogurt so I could get some good probiotic action going in my very tender tummy. Well...looks like Mom has had something going on all these years after all! My gut is oh so much better! AND, I crave yogurt all the time now. I love the vanilla flavored Greek yogurt and, yes, I eat the plain kind as well over vegetables or baked potatoes instead of butter, sour cream or cheese. My weight is now holding at a good place and my gut is much less of a problem than it used to be. Thanks, Mom!View Thread
