On 22 April I took Cadence to the ER because she had been vomiting for 2 days & on that particular day something was different. She was VERY hard to wake, she couldn't walk & was complaining that she could not breath well. (she has hx asthma so we were thinking pneumonia). After a few hours & many tests we were told she possibly had T1D (40+ ketones in urine, urine glucose > 1000, BG > 500) & was in DKA & they emergently transported her to the childrens' hospital in Nashville. They did more tests & confirmed T1D. Her A1C was 9.6% so they said it was only a matter of time before this happened. She stayed in the hospital for 2 days & was then sent home.
We are still trying to get used to all the testing, carb counting & adjusting her insulin to carb ratio. After a week of extreme highs (400+) & extreme lows (30s) her dr. said she was in the "honeymoon" phase. We are hoping this does not last too long because she is feeling so crummy.
Though we are less than a month out from dx, she is already testing on her own with little prompting & giving most of her injections after my husband or I draws them up. Her dr. is hoping to get her on a pump by the end of the year. She is one of 3 in the school (& the youngest) to have T1D & her new best buddy has a pump that she thinks is the greatest thing in the world lol.
At times I have severe info overload (like tomorrow when we go to a - manditory - class the pedi. diabetic clinic has for the day) & other days I can't get enough.
I look forward to "meeting" all of you. Please bear with me as I am sure to have TONS of questions =DView Thread
